For the last 25 years, my wife and I have been sponsoring kids through Compassion International and volunteering at the organization sponsorship events. I sensed God wanted us to do more, but I wasn't sure exactly what that would be. Back in 2020, Yusufu reached out asking for help feeding the 30 kids under his care. I knew the global food crisis was real through my work at Compassion. I also researched Jason Leist on Facebook who was helping with the ministry - and was convinced that I would try helping out, and see how Yusufu would respond to the gifts. Yusufu sent receipts, pictures, and videos of the food and items purchased, and was very grateful and transparent with his management of the orphanage. I was inspired how this man who was once an orphan, wanted to help other orphans in Uganda. I also learned that Compassion International was only able to serve 5% of the needs in Uganda as the poverty is so widespread As I got to know Yusufu, I came to realize that God had planted a vision in his heart to build a home for these kids and make a future for them that they so desperately needed. He just needed some help. I also realize the Lord was stretching my faith and was preparing my heart in ways that I could not anticipate.
Back in 2021, God made a way for us to buy some land, and begin building the dorms, kitchen and bathrooms - I was pleasantly surprised as coworkers, family, and friends also embraced the vision and gave to the building project. At the same time, I was reading the biography of George Mueller, who had built orphanages for orphans in Bristol England back in the 1800's for over 10,000 kids and was deeply inspired by his faith, commitment to prayer, and doing the work that God had called him to do. God was working on my heart to trust and share the project with my men's bible studies and see what He would do. In January of 2022, the kids finally moved into their new home. By God's grace, we've been able to raise funds for the kids to attend school - and add solar power to help the kids as they study for their exams. I put together this Web Site to promote the orphanage, and share the great work Yusufu and his team is doing in Kampala.
I not only witnesses the growth of my own faith, but my sister Julie, Yusufu, and the kids as we all saw how the Lord would bring people together from all around the world who had a heart to serve orphans. I realize that this is God's ministry, and He provides for those projects that he has ordained. The orphanage came about as the result of many prayers and donations from many people who helped out with the dorms, restrooms, showers, kitchen, garden and a well with solar power. We bought the director a motorcycle, computer and a newer cell phone. We have bought clothes and shoes for everyone at the orphanage with the help of others. We continue to support their many medical needs, schooling and food costs, which continue to increase due to inflation. There are currently 30 children and about 4-5 adults at the orphanage. Unfortunately, the other donor’s support has been dwindling and the bulk of the orphanage costs is on the few donors who consistently support the orphanage.
God has called us to "Be a voice, for those who have no voice" - Proverbs 31:8-10. Scripture has over 2000 verses that call believers to serve the poor, the orphan, and the widow. I've seen my own faith grow in ways that I never expected, as I stepped out into the great unknown. I came to learn that you simply cannot out give God, that He is our Provider, protector, and His heart is near to the down and out. If we follow Jesus, He will draw our hearts to the lives of orphans and the poor.
